Corrosion removed the NiCr resistor pattern at its edge and created one or more opens. Misregistration of the glass cover, possible cover-firing issues, and micropores within the glass and resistor-film interface were plausible paths that left the thin film vulnerable.
Why this case matters
For an open thin-film resistor with little exterior damage, use a shallow canted section to expose the protective layers and resistor edge. Assess glass registration, porosity, and the buried film together before assigning the failure solely to surface contamination.
