SEM/EDS Analysis of Alloy Plating

SEM Lab, Inc. supports routine quality control testing of alloy plating using SEM/EDS analysis to verify composition. Examples include zinc-nickel alloy, electroless nickel-phosphorous alloy, tin-lead alloy, and a wide range of other alloy combinations.

Fig. A shows SEM/EDS data for Zn-Ni plating composition over 3+ year span. This data is used to adjust bath chemistry to remain within specification limits for weight percentage of nickel in the alloy. The data can be used for SPC control charts and to compute process capability for process improvement.

Plated composition determines the performance of alloy coatings and is of primary concern to customers. Routine quality control testing of alloy coating composition is an important tool for establishing process control and credibility with the customer.
